Beyond Today: Future of Nursing Report

In 2010, a national group from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) published a landmark report entitled the Future of Nursing.  The report shares the evidence of the key contributions of nurses in healthcare and provides the roadmap that will direct the future of nursing educators and the essential roles of professional nurses.

Direct your students and their parents  to this report which can serve as a great resource to help them better understand the field of nursing.

There are four key messages to the report, but Key Message #2 is one that directly impacts your students today as they are making their decisions about the future.

Key Message:  Nurses should achieve higher levels of education & training through an improved educational system that promotes seamless transition.

Recommendations:

  • Increase the proportion of nurses with a baccalaureate degree to 80 percent by 2020.  The Iowa Board of Nursing has supported this recommendation and has launched a state-wide initiative to meet this goal.
  • Double the number of nurses with a doctorate by 2020.

What that means for your Students:  Encourage them to pursue the BSN and Advanced Degree
