Welcome to the University of Iowa Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Adult/Geriatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner program. My name is Dr. Larry Newman and as a graduate of the University of Iowa College of Nursing AGNP-PC DNP program, I am thrilled to now be its director.
The need for Adult/Geriatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioners has never been greater in Iowa. In 2013, the estimated number of people age 65 and older in Iowa was 15.6% of the total population. According to Woods & Poole Economics Inc., it is projected that 19.8% of Iowa’s total population will be age 65 and old by the year 2040. Graduates from our program are in high demand and this translates to working in a variety of clinical settings of your choice.
The Adult/Geriatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner program at University of Iowa blends superb academics with first-rate clinical experiences. Along with myself, the staff at the College of Nursing will work to find you the best clinical experience. We work to keep you as close to your home as we can but your clinical experience could be in any part of Iowa. Each year we accept up to 12 nurses into our four-year DNP program. Our class size is small so we can pay attention to every aspect for every student throughout the entire program.
The first two years of this program is all-academic. You will be provided didactic training along with the other Nurse Practitioner specialties. During the third year of training students work toward gaining competence in treating frail elderly and adult patients. By the completion of the 4-year program students get more than 1,000 clinical hours, which is more than is required by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). In the fourth year the students work on a DNP project that can range from introducing process improvement at a local nursing home to implementing an evidenced based practice screening tool at a large, hospital based, primary care clinic.
If you want to explore your potential, then apply and start your journey as an Adult/Geriatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner at the University of Iowa.
I look forward to connecting with you very soon.
