  • Neta McCleary


    Neta McCleary (Bowman), age 76, died on July 4, 2014, at Hospice of the Valley in Mesa, Ariz.

    Neta was born on December 25, 1937, in Waggoner, Ill. She graduated from Sterling High School in Ill., and from the University of Iowa in 1959. Neta married Ward McCleary on January 31, 1960. Neta enjoyed a successful and rewarding career in nursing over 46 years, which included service as: Director of Nursing Education and Director of Nursing at Broadlawns Medical Center; Director and Patient Care Coordinator of Hospice in Dubuque, Iowa, and Dover, Del.; Patient Relations Coordinator at Iowa Lutheran Hospital; and a nursing seminar consultant and educator.

  • Jane Mcilrath


    Jane Ellen Light Mcilrath 75, died peacefully in her sleep the morning of March 7, 2014. She was born in Grinnell, Iowa, graduating from Brooklyn High School before attending the University of Iowa where she completed her BSN in 1960.

    As a registered nurse, Jane loved supporting special needs babies, teaching mothers how to properly care for their fragile bundles. She retired from Mental Health Mental Retardation Infant Programs in 2000. During her 30 year career, she covered many facets of nursing but always returned to infant care.

  • Sarah E. Danner


    Sarah Danner, 32 of Carroll, died on Monday, February 10, 2014, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll surrounded by her family.

    Born on December 3, 1981 at Carroll, Iowa, Sarah Elizabeth was the daughter of Rick and Mary (Juilfs) Keat. She grew up as part of the Kevin Avenue gang and attended Fairview Elementary and Carroll Middle School. Sarah graduated as valedictorian of the Class of 2000 from Carroll High School. Pursuing her nursing degree, she attended the University of Iowa and become an avid Hawkeye fan. In 2004, Sarah received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, graduating with honors. In her first job she was employed as an obstetrics nurse at Broadlawns Hospital in Des Moines. She later became one of the OB girls at the Birth Place at St. Anthony Hospital in Carroll.

  • Carol Sloniker Pinkham


    Carol Sloniker Pinkham of Iowa City passed away on February 6th, 2014 at Windmill Manor after a long illness. The family will have a private inurnment at a later date.

    Carol was born October 6th, 1949 in Wisconsin. She was adopted by Miles and Lucille Sloniker, lived briefly in Kenosha, WI, and spent her school years in Algona, IA. She shared her childhood with her brother, Kim James Sloniker, of North Liberty, IA.

    Carol married Jimmy R. Pinkham on October 30, 1979. She became a step-parent of Tylila N. Pinkham of Iowa City, IA. On November 11 she gave birth to Beau J Pinkham of Iowa City, IA.

    After years as a dental assistant and full-time parent, she returned to the University of Iowa to study nursing. She graduated in December 1994 with highest honors, first in her class.

  • Kathy Anderson


    Kathy Anderson, 85, of Iowa City passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 15, 2014, at Oaknoll Retirement Residence Assisted Living. A gathering will be held Saturday, January 25, at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. A private family inurnment will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church prior to the gathering.

    Kathy was born on March 4th 1928 to George and Kate Bickel in Vinton, Iowa. She attended school in Vinton and graduated from high school in 1945. Following graduation, she attended the University of Iowa, and graduated with her Bachelor of Arts in Nursing in 1951. On December 30, 1950, she married George S. Anderson at Old Brick in Iowa City.

  • Vera Mae Wilson


    Vera Mae (Baumgartner) Wilson, 88, of Waterloo, Iowa, died at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home on Tuesday, January 14, 2014.

    Vera Mae was born on May 6, 1925 in Wadena, Iowa, daughter of Hans and Edith Perkins Baumgartner. She graduated from Strawberry Point High School in 1942 and received her RN degree from the University of Iowa School of Nursing in 1946.

  • Kimberly Kay (Loney) Thomas


    Kimi Kay was born April 24, 1974, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Robert and Linda. Kim graduated from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Upon graduation, Kim began a lifelong career at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics as an RN, always giving comfort and care to those who needed her. Working many long, hard hours but always doing what she loved—helping others.

  • A. Joy Thorn


    A. Joy Thorn, age 73, of Horicon, died on Saturday, October 5, 2013, at Hillside Manor in Beaver Dam.

    The former Alice Joy Scrivner was born on November 16, 1939, in Colorado Spring, Colorado, to Edmond F. and Elna (Lans) Scrivner. Joy lived her childhood years in Leon, Iowa, and attended State University of Iowa, graduating as a registered nurse in 1961. On September 3, 1961 she was united in marriage with Gene Thorn in Leon. She worked at University Hospitals in Iowa City and in 1964 she moved to Waterloo, Iowa, where she worked as a nursing instructor at Hawk Eye Tech.

  • Beth Erkonen


    On Aug. 23, 2013, Beth Erkonen’s soul left this earth. She died after a brief, sudden battle with lymphoma. Consistent with her generous character, she donated her body to the Anatomy Department at the University of Iowa.

    She was born in Sterling, Ill., on May 21, 1934, to Isaac and Ella Mae (Renkes) Vandermyde. She graduated from Morrison High School in 1952. In 1956, she graduated from the University of Iowa College of Nursing with an RN, BS. While a nursing student, she met her husband, Bill. They were married on Sept. 7, 1957. Her long career in nursing included many years as a visiting nurse in Streator, Ill. For her devoted care of others, she was awarded a Distinguished Citizen of the Year award. She was a longtime volunteer at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, accruing over 5,000 service hours.

  • Sandy Powell


    Sandy Powell, 73 of rural North Liberty died at her home Tuesday, August 6, 2013.

    Memorial services will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, August 14, 2013, at the First United Methodist Church in North Liberty. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the church. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made in her memory to the First United Methodist Church of North Liberty.

    Sandra Rae Powell was born April 13, 1940, in Anamosa, IA the daughter of Thomas and Geraldine (Graves) Powell. Following graduation from high school in Anamosa, Sandra received her BS and RN from Coe College. She later attended Rutgers University and Columbia University receiving her Master's degree, and returned to Iowa City to the University of Iowa for her PhD in higher education. She was a professor in the College of Nursing at the University of Iowa retiring over ten years ago.
