North Iowans complete U of I degrees online

MASON CITY | Some North Iowans are completing degrees from the University of Iowa without leaving home.

In May 2010 a University of Iowa office on the campus of North Iowa Area Community College opened and a partnership coordinator position was established.

DNP Students Elected to Iowa APNA Chapter

Three students from the UI College of Nursing’s Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner/Doctor of Nursing Practice (PMHNP/DNP) program were recently elected to the Iowa Chapter of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA).

Specifically, Margaret Burchianti was elected president; David Hatfield was named chapter secretary; and Rebecca Devine will serve as member at large.

Smith’s Article on her Gerontological Research Wins Writing Award

Marianne Smith, PhD, RN, associate professor at UI’s College of Nursing, recently learned that she has been selected to receive the 16th Edna Stilwell Writing Award.

Smith won the award for her article “Improving Antipsychotic Agent Use in Nursing Homes: Development of an Algorithm for Treating Problem Behaviors in Dementia,” which was published in May 2013 in the Journal of Gerontological Nursing.

Steelman Discusses Patient Safety

Victoria Steelman, PhD, RN, CNOR, FAAN, assistant professor at UI’s College of Nursing and president-elect of the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) was recently interviewed by the online news outlet DugDug about “Top 10 patient safety issues: what more can we do?”—a paper she recently published in the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses Journal.
