Steelman Discusses Patient Safety
Victoria Steelman, PhD, RN, CNOR, FAAN, assistant professor at UI’s College of Nursing and president-elect of the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) was recently interviewed by the online news outlet DugDug about “Top 10 patient safety issues: what more can we do?”—a paper she recently published in the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses Journal.
The following excerpt if from the interview:
We reviewed available data from a wide range of regional and national sources and published research about adverse events in the operating room. We wanted to know the frequency and outcomes associated with these events, and if there was more that we should be doing to improve the safety of care of patients undergoing surgery.
We identified 10 top patient safety issues for patients undergoing surgery that require additional action, and made recommendations focusing on each of these safety issues.
First, we have provided educational programs about this article and our recommendations. We have done this to encourage a culture of continuous improvement and adoption of best practices. Where we have clinical questions that are unanswered through research, I am conducting research studies.
