National Nurse Practitioner Week
By Andrea Achenbach, MSN, ARNP, FNP-C | Sycamore Health Center | 11/12/2014
The Week of November 9-15 is National Nurse Practitioner Week. We are very excited at the Sycamore Health Center this week as we are one of the few nurse practitioner-run practices in the Iowa City area. In celebration of this week, I would like to share with you what being a nurse practitioner means for each of our providers at the Sycamore Health Center. I asked my colleagues to answer the following questions:
What is a nurse practitioner? What makes a nurse practitioner unique?
“A nurse practitioner is a nurse with an advanced degree; either a master’s or doctorate degree. Nurse practitioners can prescribe medication, and manage chronic or acute health conditions similar to what a physician or physician assistant does. Nurse practitioners are unique because they consider the whole person from social to medical concerns when treating a patient. The goal of most nurse practitioners is to keep you happy and healthy.”—Andrea Achenbach, Family Nurse Practitioner, Sycamore Health Clinic
“A nurse practitioner is a nurse who has advanced clinical training beyond being a RN. They go to graduate school and specialize in one of many areas including acute care, family, pediatric, and much more! Nurse practitioners are unique in that we blend diagnosing and treating health care conditions with emphasis on disease prevention and health management. We focus on both cure and care!”—Krista Ford, Family Nurse Practitioner, Sycamore Health Clinic
“According to the American Psychiatric Nurse Association, psychiatric nurse practitioners apply the nursing process to assess, diagnose, and treat individuals and families with psychiatric disorders or the potential for such disorders using their full scope of therapeutic skills, including the prescription of medication and administration of psychotherapy. As a psychiatric nurse practitioner, I take the time to listen and understand my patients to ensure that each one of them gets the best personalized care.”—Jean Underwood, Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, Sycamore Health Clinic
