Wilson Discusses How Nurse Residency Program Can Prevent Burnout

Thad Wilson

Thad Wilson, PhD, RN, FNP-BC, FAAN, FAANP, executive associate dean at UI’s College of Nursing was recently part of a panel of experts assembled by Iowa Public Radio to discuss the “common crisis of job burnout.”

“What we’re doing is a residency for nurses. For the first year that they’re in the hospital, or whatever [health care] setting they’re in, they have additional education, they have support groups, they have others who will help them with the parts of being a nurse that we don’t have time to fit into our curriculum,” said Dr. Wilson. “The research would indicate that when a fully implemented residency program is in place it will cut your turnover rate in half, or better.”
