Biography

Dr. Buck, Sally Mathis Hartwig Professor in Gerontological Nursing in the University of Iowa College of Nursing, is also director of the interprofessional Barbara and Richard Csomay Center of Gerontological Excellence at UI. The mission of the Center is to advance innovations in research, education, and practice to promote optimal aging and quality of life in all older adults and their caregivers. Dr. Buck has over 30 years’ experience in cardiovascular nursing along the trajectory from prevention to hospice care. Her strong track record of funded research focuses on developing non-pharmacological solutions for the “wicked problems” older adults face in the community. Her research experience includes 15 funded studies totaling 13 million dollars. Her most recently funded study is Differential Impacts of Person and System Level Determinants of Health on Dyadic Heart Failure Management: The IMPACT-D Study (1R21NR021422). 

Dr. Buck stands in a unique position at the nexus of palliative, geriatric, and cardiovascular nursing - contributing to international palliative care essential practices; leading funded interprofessional initiatives to improve rural geriatric care using distance technology; conducting cutting edge dyadic symptom management research; authoring multiple impactful papers advocating earlier referral to palliative care for heart failure and presenting on palliative care topics in heart failure venues resulting in a national discussion of heart failure patients as a palliative care population. Her substantive contributions have been acknowledged by national and international organizations by awarding her a Fellow of Palliative Care Nursing in palliative care, a Fellow of the American Heart Association in the cardiovascular science, a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America in gerontology, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing in nursing.
