The Barbara and Richard Csomay Center for Gerontological Excellence advances the belief that nurses who are prepared in the best evidence-based gerontological practices make a critical difference in the quality of life of older persons. To this end, the Csomay Center at the University of Iowa College of Nursing develops and maintains Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) Guidelines as a means to promote “best practices” among nurses and others who provide day-to-day care to older adults.

The Csomay Center Evidence-Based Practice Guideline program includes 27 evidence-based practice guidelines focusing on promoting health outcomes, safety, and quality of life well-being for persons primarily in long-term care settings.

The Csomay Center’s EBP guidelines have several distinguishing attributes, including that they:

  • Focus specifically on nursing care for older adults
  • Address significant issues, including patient conditions and treatment experienced by older adults in long-term care settings
  • Include an in-depth literature review and overview of the topic
  • Graded with a level of evidence for assessment and treatment recommendations based on systematic literature search and appraisal
  • Include Nursing Interventions Classification (NIC) and Nursing Outcomes Classifications (NOC)
  • Provide direction to evaluate the implementation of the guideline
  • Include a comprehensive appendix with a range of essential assessment, monitoring, and evaluation tools that can be used for the planning and documentation of care
  • Include Quick Reference Guides for rapid point of care use

The Csomay Center’s guidelines set a standard for comprehensive and practical evidence-based practice in long-term care environments. Each guideline is authored by nationally recognized experts in specific topic areas; undergo peer review; and are revised and updated every five years. Furthermore, these EBP guidelines may be used as educational materials for either staff education or for teaching gerontological care to undergraduate or graduate students.
