Natany Ferreira Oberfrank, PhD, RN

Assistant Professor
Biography

Dr. Natany Ferreira Oberfrank is an assistant professor at the University of Iowa College of Nursing. She leads a research program focused on behavioral interventions for individuals managing heart failure (HF) symptoms, specifically tailored to various knowledge and motivational phenotypes. Her work is rooted in her clinical experience in a cardiac adult intensive care unit in Brazil, where she primarily worked with underrepresented and vulnerable populations. Over the years, her clinical focus has been on improving the management of HF symptoms, enhancing health outcomes, reducing hospital readmissions, and improving perceived quality of life for these patients. Dr. Ferreira Oberfrank's doctoral research in translational science led to the development of a novel study approach that treats both nurses with specialized HF knowledge and people living with HF as equal experts in validating nursing terminologies. This approach emphasizes patient empowerment, recognizing patients as experts in managing their condition. During her postdoctoral training, Dr. Ferreira Oberfrank gained expertise in qualitative research design, particularly in cognitive interview techniques. Her research interests include behavioral interventions, HF symptom science, nursing informatics, patient-centered outcomes, self-care in older adults, and standardized nursing classifications (NANDA, NIC, and NOC).
