Helen Byington
Helen Beneke Byington, 93, of Iowa City, died peacefully November 21, 2019 at Oaknoll Health Center.
A memorial service to celebrate Helen's life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her name to Camp Courageous Monticello, Oaknoll Foundation or St. Andrews Presbyterian Church.
Helen was born June 22, 1926 in Cedar Falls, Iowa the daughter of Herman and Ethyl Wilson Beneke. She graduated from Estherville High School in Estherville, IA before serving as a Cadet Nurse for the Cadet Nurse Corps. She later graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in nursing. She married William Moss Byington on April 28, 1948 in Iowa City.

Lydia Saggau Goode
Lydia Ann Saggau Goode passed away December 28, 2018 in San Pedro, California, following a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis. She was the youngest of three children born to Bernie and Angie Saggau in Denison, Iowa. Lydia attended Denison High School and the University of Iowa, graduating in 1957 from the College of Nursing. While at Iowa she met her future husband, John Goode, in the clinic of the School of Dentistry. They were married on November 14, 1958 and recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

Mike Wood
Michael Kenneth Wood, age 70, of Sioux City, died Friday, August 23, 2019, from complications during his battle with cancer.
Mike was born July 21, 1949, in Long Beach, CA, to Dale and Sarah (Agnew) Wood. His early life was spent traveling as his father was in the military, ending up in Marysville, CA. He married Lorraine Staley and two children were born of that union; Shelly and David Wood. They later divorced and he married Barb Day in 1991.
He graduated from Burbank High School, CA, and attended Morningside College, Sioux City, IA, joining the Air Force in 1969-1973. He attended the University of Iowa College of Nursing, obtaining a Bachelors of Nursing (BSN) in 1976. While attending nursing school, Mike worked in Iowa City in the Pediatric Unit until he moved to Sioux City where he worked at Unity Point in the Orthopedic Unit for 35 years.

Judy Collins
Judith Anne Collins passed away on Tuesday, July 30, 2019 in Davenport.
Judy was born February 1, 1943 in Waterloo, Iowa, the daughter of Elizabeth (Stevenson) and Eugene Collins. After graduating from West Waterloo High School in 1961, she began her nursing career at the University of Iowa School of Nursing. While at Iowa she was a member of Chi Omega sorority, Angel Flight, Sigma Theta Tau nursing honorary, and played in the Scottish Highlanders. After becoming an RN she married Charles Honnold, MD, and moved to Portland, Oregon. She later moved with her husband and two sons to Muscatine, Iowa where she served as member and president of the Muscatine Board of Education and became active in the local Democratic Party. She later moved to Davenport to continue her career and care for her parents.
Judy demonstrated excellence through her lifelong contribution to the field of nursing and her effect on the history of health care in Iowa. With persistence, wisdom, and foresight she mentored nurses, encouraging them to advocate for their patients and their profession to the fullest extent of their licensure.

Veronica Brighton
Veronica “Ronnie” Brighton was born in Iowa Falls, Iowa, in January, 1948, to Harold and Bernice Brighton. There was a blizzard raging in Iowa on the day of her birth and her parents were unable to get their car to start, so a neighbor gave them a ride to the hospital. She has never liked winter since.
Ronnie grew up in Williams, Iowa, and received a very good primary & secondary education from the public schools in Williams and Blairsburg, Iowa. She became a strong proponent of excellent public schools. She attended Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Des Moines and became a registered nurse in 1969. She practiced nursing in the Des Moines area in critical care at Mercy, Methodist & Broadlawns hospitals for several years, then returned to school at the University of Iowa for her BSN. After that Ronnie switched her focus to psychiatric / mental health nursing and received a master’s degree in 1977 in that specialty. She practiced psychiatric nursing in some capacity since that time and considered it the “best kept secret in nursing”, and a specialty she tried very hard to get other nurses to pursue.

Jean Brown
Jean Livingstone Brown, 95, of Cedar Rapids and Brevard, N.C., passed away peacefully at UnityPoint St. Luke's Hospital on Monday, April 8, 2019.
Jean was born Dec. 29, 1923, in Jones County, Iowa, the oldest child of Robert C. Livingstone and Evelyn Sutliff Livingstone. She graduated from Anamosa High School and entered the University of Iowa, where she earned a master's degree in nursing. On June 23, 1945, she married her loving husband, Robert Bruce Brown, at the Anamosa Methodist Church. The young couple followed Bruce's career as a chemical engineer to establish life together in Brevard, N.C. Jean used her nurse's training working as a volunteer, providing community and medical support to families of need in the mountains of Transylvania County. It was through this work she and Bruce came to develop a loving lifelong relationship with a family of a mom and dad and their 10 children.

Beverly Gallatin
Beverly J. “Bev” Gallatin, 72, of Mahomet, Ill., formerly of Peoria, Ill., and Waterloo, died Monday, Feb. 4, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis after a brief illness.
She was born Nov. 20, 1946, in Story City, to Emery J. and Betty J. Hanson Tegland. She married Howard P. Gallatin on June 8, 1968, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ellsworth.
She graduated from South Hamilton High School in 1965, received her bachelor of science in nursing from the University of Iowa in 1969 and her master’s in education from Illinois State University in 2000. Bev was an ICU nurse and cardiac education nurse at St. Francis and Proctor Hospitals in Peoria; diabetic education nurse at Allen Memorial Hospital and finished her career teaching nursing at Hawkeye Community College.

Carol Chittenden
Anchorage resident Carol A. Chittenden, 77 years of age, quietly passed away at her Anchorage home in the early morning of December 2, 2018.
Carol was born on April 1, 1941 at Lake City, Iowa to Clarence and Mary Woolridge of Correctionville, Iowa, Carol earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. This was a five-year program to graduate nurse instructors.
Carol worked as a State Certified RN in California and Alaska until her husband was assigned by the state to work on Prince of Wales Island. On Prince of Wales Island she worked, pro bono, as a trauma nurse in handling the numerous emergencies that would occur in the area of Craig, Alaska. She did this for 5 years until her husband was transferred to Anchorage. After the move to Anchorage, she changed hats and followed her heart to teach young people and taught in a private Christian school for 31 years.

Dolores Boeke
Dolores “Toni” Boeke, age 93, of Hubbard, IA, passed away on Wednesday, January 2, 2019 at Hubbard Care Center.
Dolores Anita (Martin) “Toni” Boeke was born on October 12, 1925 in the family home in Fort Atkinson, Iowa. She was one of five children born to John and Agnes (Winter) Martin. She grew up on the family farm west of Fort Atkinson, Iowa.
She received her education at the St. John’s Parochial School through the 8th grade and graduated from the Fort Atkinson High School. She enrolled in the Nursing Cadet Program at the University of Iowa in Iowa City and graduated as registered nurse in 1948.
While working in the hospital wards, she met Jack Boeke who also worked at the UI Hospitals and Clinics. She and Jack began to date and on February 11, 1950 they were united in marriage at St Thomas Moore Catholic Church in Iowa City, Iowa.

Mary Louise Wittak Wildenberg
Mary Louise Wittak Wildenberg, West Branch, IA passed away on Wednesday, October 31, 2018.
She loved her family and was an advocate for children, mental illness and the disabled. She was 75.
Born to Clarence and Hilda (Schmatz) Wittak in Manitowoc, Wis., she and J. Patrick Wildenberg were married for 51 years. She loved time with family, let others know she cared, and always kept her sense of humor.
She was an alumna of Lincoln High School (Manitowoc), the University of Wisconsin Madison, and the University of Iowa College of Nursing. A Navy nurse and college lecturer, she was most proud of her work helping preschoolers as a Head Start nurse until her car crash in 1992. She loved people who were different from her, their cultures and food. But she did not love cottage cheese in any cuisine.
