Biography

Valerie Garr is an Adjunct Assistant Professor and Co-Instructor for the undergraduate course Caring for Vulnerable Populations. She is a licensed Quality Administrator of the Intercultural Development Inventory and leverages evidence-based knowledge and research on cultural responsiveness in healthcare delivery. Her work prepares nursing students with the global skills necessary to care for diverse patient populations within complex health systems. Additionally, she provides faculty and staff with evidence-based resources to enhance cultural responsiveness in teaching, curriculum development, advising, and service.

Valerie also coordinates the Supplemental Instruction and NEST Tutoring Program, offering academic support to UI nursing interest students and first-year BSN students enrolled in high-risk core science foundation courses. She oversees the BSN Admissions Essay Workshop, assisting second-semester nursing interest majors applying through the UI BSN standard admissions process. Additionally, she serves as an advisor to the Multicultural Nursing Association, which is open to all UI nursing interest and BSN students.
