The Iowa Online Nurse Residency Program (IONRP) director, Nicole Weathers, MSN, RN, NPD-BC, a dedicated advocate for rural health, recently attended the National Rural Health Association's (NRHA) 36th Annual Rural Health Policy Institute in Washington, D.C., held from February 11-13, 2025. This event gathered hundreds of rural health advocates nationwide to discuss and shape the future of rural health policy.

The three-day institute was full of informational sessions, engaging directly with elected officials and exploring the latest advancements in rural health advocacy. Key topics included strategies for improving healthcare access in rural areas, addressing health disparities, and developing effective advocacy techniques.

"It was an incredible experience to connect with other advocates from Iowa and share our stories with members of Congress," said Weathers. "We need to ensure that rural communities receive the attention and resources they deserve, and this event was an important step in that direction."

The NRHA Policy Institute emphasized the importance of collective action and provided valuable resources for attendees to continue their advocacy efforts at home. With renewed energy and insights, Nicole and the University of Iowa College of Nursing are committed to advancing rural health initiatives and making a positive impact throughout the state.
