BSN - FAQs
General
How many students are admitted per year through direct admission?
- We plan to admit 168 students to the College of Nursing through direct admission.
- Of those students, 84 will begin the nursing curriculum in the fall semester of their third year and follow the 4-year track, and 84 students will begin the nursing curriculum in the spring semester of their third year and follow the 4.5-year track.
- Both tracks provide students with the same nursing education, with the same required classes, and lead to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree.
How will you determine who is assigned to a fall or spring semester start?
When you sign up for an interview in December, we will ask you to select your preference for either the 4- or 4.5-year track. While we will do our best to honor your choice, it is possible that chosen preferences for either track could exceed the capacity of that track. In that instance, students will be assigned through a random selection process.
Are there benefits to starting in the spring semester?
Historically, we have always had half of our students in a 4.5-year track. There are some real benefits to that plan which include, but are not limited to:
Work full-time while taking a break from classes. Students are not required to be enrolled in that fall semester if they are a spring semester start to the nursing curriculum in their third year.
Study abroad and gain valuable international experience.
Add a major or minor to broaden your academic and career opportunities.
Participate as a student-athlete or marching band member while staying on track academically.
Get involved in campus life through activities, events, clubs, organizations, and other extracurricular opportunities.
I have a 4.0 GPA and an excellent ACT score. Am I likely to be admitted via direct admission?
The admissions process is highly competitive and comprehensive. Grades, application essays, and interviews all play a part in admissions decisions.
Can I submit updates to my application?
Direct admission applicants may submit an updated transcript until the deadline. No other updates are accepted.
Do you accept letters of recommendation?
No. The College of Nursing does not accept letters of recommendation for applicants to the BSN prelicensure program.
Do you require an entrance exam?
We do not require an entrance exam, but we do require a minimum ACT composite or SAT total score for admission eligibility.
ACT minimum composite score:
Iowa residents: 24
Non-residents: 26
SAT minimum total score:
Iowa residents: 1160
Non-residents: 1230

Standard Admission
Why is the University of Iowa phasing out the standard admission process?
This change creates a fairer and more transparent admissions process for students interested in the College of Nursing. Under the previous standard admission model, hundreds of UI nursing interest students applied for 84 available seats each year. Students who were not admitted had to rethink their academic and career plans midway through their college experience.
By moving to a fully direct admission model, prospective students receive a clear admissions decision from the start. Those who are admitted can begin their college journey with confidence, while those who are not admitted can explore alternative academic pathways and make informed decisions.
When will this change take place?
For students with a high school diploma planning to enroll at the University of Iowa as a first-year student in fall 2027 and beyond, direct admission is the only option to earn a prelicensure BSN from the UI College of Nursing. This includes high school students graduating in spring 2027 or after.
I am a current nursing interest student at the University of Iowa - how does this impact me?
Current nursing interest students enrolled at the university will not be affected. For current and fall 2026 incoming UI nursing interest students*, the final opportunity to apply for standard admission is February 2028.
* In some situations, incoming fall 2027 students who meet specific criteria.
Can I be in progress with required prerequisites when I apply via standard admission?
Yes. Please refer to limitations on what is required at the time of application and time of matriculation (enrollment) outlined on the standard admission webpage: BSN-Standard Admission.
