Adam (09BA) and Karley (14BS, 18DDS) Brantman established the Jennie Brantman Scholarship to honor Adam’s mother Jennie (80BS, 03MSN). This scholarship supports students enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing or Master of Science in NursingEntry into Practice programs with a preference to students who are single parents.

“This scholarship was created to honor my mother, a woman whose strength and determination had a lasting impact on me,” Adam said. “I remember her working a full-time job and then coming home and studying at the kitchen table.”

Jennie, a single mother, who returned to school later in life, worked tirelessly to provide for her family while attending nursing school. “The scholarship is meant to carry forward her example: that it’s never too late to change your path, and that the pursuit of bettering yourself and your family, especially under non-traditional circumstances, is something to be honored and supported,” Adam said.

Jennie worked at the Iowa City Veteran Affairs Medical Center from 1994 to 2020 when she retired, and in 2021, was recognized as one of the 100 Great Iowa Nurses.

“Being a nurse was a privilege and an honor,” Jennie said. “To make a real difference and a personal connection with a patient is something that I will always cherish. I truly know that nursing was not my job, it was my passion. I would love for others to know they can experience the same.”
