Established in 2023, the College of Nursing Notable Preceptor Award recognizes exceptional preceptors who model and encourage critical thinking, compassion, curiosity, and motivation; who are knowledgeable; and who have a lasting impact on student learning. One undergraduate and one graduate preceptor are selected for the award each year.

We are pleased to announce Sally Twedt (02MSN-PNP) as the winner of the 2024-2025 Graduate Preceptor Award. Twedt is a board-certified pediatric nurse practitioner who has practiced at Des Moines Pediatric & Adolescent Clinic since 2003. She was nominated by Pediatric Nurse Practitioner - Primary Care Doctor of Nursing Practice student Kylee Cibula.

From Cibula's nomination:

Sally Twedt is an exceptional preceptor. A proud University of Iowa graduate, she has been a pediatric nurse practitioner (PNP) for over 23 years and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to her role. Her expertise makes her an invaluable resource—not only to her patients and students but also to her colleagues.

One of the aspects I value most about learning from Sally is her teaching approach. She frequently asks for my opinion on patient cases—encouraging me to think critically and suggest treatment plans. When I’m off track, she patiently explains alternative approaches, always with kindness and tact. Her supportive style has done wonders for my confidence as a student.

Sally’s compassion is evident in her daily interactions. Over the years, many of her former pediatric patients have become parents themselves—and they now bring their own children to her for care. That kind of loyalty speaks volumes about her character and the quality of care she provides.

She is deeply committed to advancing the PNP profession and has precepted University of Iowa PNP students for 20 years (I believe)! She exclusively accepts students from Iowa, citing the strong educational foundation and hands-on faculty involvement as reasons for her loyalty to the program. Her passion for teaching is unmistakable. Every day I work with Sally, I learn clinical pearls and practical techniques that enhance my understanding and skills.

I am incredibly grateful to the University of Iowa for pairing me with Sally. This experience has been transformative, and I have grown immensely as a future pediatric nurse practitioner under her mentorship.
