The University of Iowa College of Nursing Iowa Online Nurse Residency Program (IONRP) recently joined rural healthcare leaders from across the country at the National Rural Health Association (NRHA) Rural Health Clinic and Critical Access Hospital Conferences, held September 15-18, 2026, in Kansas City, Missouri.
Representing the program was IONRP Director Nicole Weathers, DNP, RN, NPD-BC, who connected with hospital and clinic leaders interested in innovative approaches to nurse recruitment, transition-to-practice support, professional development, and retention.
As a proud Gold Partner of the NRHA, IONRP was honored to exhibit at this important national gathering focused on advancing healthcare in rural communities. The conference provided an opportunity to engage with healthcare professionals and decision-makers who are committed to strengthening the rural healthcare workforce and improving access to quality care.
During the conference, Weathers shared information about IONRP's comprehensive approach to supporting nurses across the continuum of professional development. What began as an online nurse residency program has expanded to include preceptor development, nurse well-being education, coaching opportunities, and other evidence-based resources designed to strengthen the nursing workforce in organizations nationwide.
The event also offered valuable opportunities to strengthen existing partnerships and build new connections with rural hospitals, clinics, and healthcare organizations. Visitors to the IONRP exhibit learned how structured transition-to-practice and professional development programs can help improve nurse confidence, engagement, and long-term retention.
"After attending this event for many years, what continues to stand out is the people. The connections we build and maintain over time create a solid foundation for collaboration and shared problem-solving. Those relationships are essential as we work together to support nurses and strengthen rural healthcare."
As healthcare organizations continue to navigate workforce challenges, IONRP remains committed to collaborating with rural hospitals and clinics to provide practical, scalable solutions that support nurses and strengthen the communities they serve.
