Biography

Daniel E. Wesemann, DNP, MSW, RN, APRN, PMHNP-BC, FAANP, FAAN, is an Associate Clinical Professor and Director of the PMHNP-DNP Program at the University of Iowa College of Nursing. A dual-trained psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner and clinical social worker, Dr. Wesemann has more than two decades of experience across outpatient psychiatry, inpatient behavioral health, addiction treatment, homeless services, correctional mental health, and college-based veteran care. He maintains active clinical practice across community and academic settings, providing evidence-based psychopharmacology and psychotherapy across the lifespan. He also hosts Peplau's Ghost podcast celebrating the role of psychotherapy by nurses. 

A nationally recognized educator and scholar, Dr. Wesemann has led the PMHNP-DNP program since 2015, overseeing curriculum development, student progression, and DNP project mentorship. His scholarship centers on psychotherapy skill development among PMHNPs, pediatric mental health, bipolar disorder, psychopharmacology, and the expanding role of advanced practice psychiatric nursing. He has published in leading journals, contributed to national textbooks, and secured state and national funding to expand mental health education and access. Dr. Wesemann is an active leader in professional nursing organizations, serving as President of the International Society of Psychiatric Nurses (ISPN) and contributing to APNA & NONPF initiatives. He is a Fellow of both the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and the American Academy of Nursing. Internationally, he is a founding delegate to the International Council of Mental Health Nurses.
