Kyungmi Lee, PhD, RN is an Assistant Professor at the University of Iowa College of Nursing whose research advances technology-enabled approaches to improve health and self-management among older adults with chronic conditions and their family caregivers. Her work examines dynamic changes in daily behaviors and symptoms using smartphones and wearable sensors, with a focus on digital phenotyping, ecological momentary assessment (EMA), machine learning, and intensive longitudinal data analysis. Her research aims to identify micro-longitudinal patterns in everyday life that can inform personalized, home-based interventions to support symptom management, daily routines, and caregiver well-being.

Dr. Lee’s research focuses on older adults living with chronic conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and cancer, as well as their family caregivers. By integrating real-time digital data with advanced analytic and visualization methods, her work seeks to translate complex behavioral and symptom patterns into actionable insights for improving health outcomes and reducing caregiver burden.

Prior to her academic career in the United States, Dr. Lee worked as a registered nurse in the Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Intensive Care Unit and as a clinical research coordinator at Samsung Medical Center in Seoul, South Korea. She also conducted public health research at the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and worked in long-term care management at the National Health Insurance Service. Her long-term goal is to develop scalable, technology-enabled self-management strategies that leverage real-time digital data to improve health outcomes for older adults with chronic condition.
