Jacalyn McKenzie, DNP, RN

Biography

Dr. Jacalyn McKenzie is a nursing professor at the University of Iowa, bringing more than 30 years of experience in clinical practice, academic leadership, and healthcare simulation. She is a nationally recognized speaker dedicated to advancing safe, high-quality patient care and preparing the next generation of professional nurses. Her Doctor of Nursing Practice focused on interprofessional simulation education and teamwork development, reflecting her commitment to collaborative practice and performance improvement. She also holds a post-graduate certificate in Simulation Education from Bryan College, enhancing her expertise in the design and implementation of innovative, evidence-based simulation learning environments.

Dr. McKenzie’s professional experience spans both academia and health system leadership, including serving as Nurse Manager for Inpatient and Emergency Services at Washington County Hospital and Clinics, where she directed multidisciplinary teams and led initiatives that elevated staff development, quality outcomes, and organizational performance. 

Prior to joining the University of Iowa, she held faculty and program leadership positions at Allen College and Iowa Wesleyan University, developing curriculum, mentoring BSN through DNP learners, leading program evaluation, and establishing interprofessional simulation and OSCE programs. Her teaching and scholarly interests include leadership, quality and safety, professional role development, simulation pedagogy, and advanced clinical reasoning. 

Dr. McKenzie is dedicated to lifelong learning and the delivery of compassionate, patient-centered care while preparing nurses to lead with integrity.
