My research focuses on individuals and families affected by inherited cancer syndromes, who carry genetic variants that increase their lifetime risk of developing specific cancers compared to the general population. These individuals face complex decisions related to cancer screening and risk-reducing interventions, highlighting the critical need for tailored education and support to optimize their health outcomes. Despite advances in genetic testing and counseling, important knowledge gaps remain regarding how awareness of inherited cancer risk impacts psychological well-being, lifestyle behaviors, adherence to recommended screening protocols, and choices related to risk-reducing surgeries. The primary aim of my research is to investigate these gaps to better understand the experiences and decision-making processes of patients with hereditary cancer risk. By examining these factors, I seek to provide actionable insights for healthcare providers and researchers involved in the care of this population. Ultimately, this research will guide the development of tools, interventions, and educational resources designed to support patients and families.
